Music Videos and Ringtones
Are music videos going to take over ringtones as mobile devices get more powerful and download speeds increase? First there was the advent of cell phones that could play videos. Then came the cell phone that could support portions of music videos or home videos as ringtones. In today's market there are many high-end mobile handsets that feature high resolution and a wide LCD screen. These capabilities make them ideal to support a wide array of video ringtones. In light of this, industry experts are asking whether video ringtones are the wave of the future.
Will they or will they not replace the standard ringtone of today? There are some indicators that they might. One of these is the video ringtones are inexpensive. Many are free. Others are available for only a minimal charge. Also, video ringtones usually look and sound very good. Another factor that makes video ringtones attractive is that they are easy to procure. They can be nabbed from a computer or a DVD. They can be downloaded from the Internet. Often video ringtones are from homemade videos that feature the cell phone owner's family or friends, so they can be personalized. Once music videos have been procured, they can be enjoyed for as long as the cell phone owner wants them. When he has new video footage of his own or finds something that he likes better, the owner can easily swap out a new video for the old one. This ease and flexibility means that most ringtones have a short lifespan; cell phone users who are savvy enough to download video ringtones don't mind doing so frequently.
With all those advantages, why aren't video ringtones used by everyone now? What are the drawbacks? One factor is that some people, especially those who are older, just are not interested in adding any level of complication to what they view as an already technologically confusing world. A major concern is that when someone downloads a free video ringtone he may also inadvertently download spyware or a virus. This may happen even if the web portal provides anti-virus protection. Often the protection is simply inadequate. A second drawback is that using a video ringtone increases the load placed on the battery, which may cause the battery lose its charge more quickly. Video ringtones offer both advantages and disadvantages. The key factor in whether or not they make regular ringtones obsolete seems to depend upon whether consumers tire of the novelty of having a favorite star or family member with them whenever they receive a call. Unfortunately, no one knows how to determine that.
