- I'm from Memphis and first saw B.B. King at the 1st or 2nd Beale Street Blues Festival in 1976. Beale Street wasn't renovated yet and he played on a portable stage from Dixie Rents and there was a chain link fence around the area for the people who did or did not pay. We had had a lot of racial tension since Martin Luther King was killed, especially in that part of town, but not that night. The atomosphere was almost reverant since everyone there loved the blues.
