So What was Miles introduction of Modal playing to jazz players - a completely new form of scaled down simplified harmony, allowing the players to stretch out on one or two chords rather than the predominate Jazz and Standards tunes of using harmony movements into related and unrelated keys, requiring a new approach to improvisation - a nice relief and challenging creativity in a different way since the musician now has to find a way to make a statement with little direction from the harmony.
